Opium-Drug-Facts Raw opium is made by extracting opium sap from the poppy and letting it evaporate and
harden in contact with air. The resultant soft brown material is raw opium. With further processing
refinement it can be made in to morpine or heroin but, internationally it is widely used in this crude
state.
It can be smoked in a pipe, eaten or made in to drinks. Decoction of poppy straw is widely used in
opium-growing countries as a child-soporific.
Either poppy heads or opium is sometimes cooked up with a solvent and the resultant opiate extract
drawn in to a syringe for injection. Being thick and non-sterile, such an injecting process can result in
serious infection and vein damage.
Opium is a relatively weak compound, and risk of overdose is lower than with other compounds.
However, it is still a powerfully addictive substance.
